I have come to love a mixture of nonfiction and fiction books. Especially Bible studies or inspirational books by Jen Hatmaker, Ann VosKamp, Sarah Bessey, Lysa TerKeurst, Lisa Jo Baker, etc. I also have a deep abiding love for historical romance (both Christian and non-Christian), especially if it’s centered on the Old West, mail order brides, and Alaska. I also love all things Amish, and not just because I moved to Amish country two years ago. Their culture is inspiring.

There was a season in my life when I read a lot of fiction, but I have found most “Christian” fiction to have repetitive plots without the grace of excellent writing style. Now if I feel the need of fiction, I’ll listen to a classic such as Charles Dickens on Audiobooks. My great joy is reading missionary biographies and other cross-cultural life stories. I have found late in life how narrow my American perspective is and I hunger to see more of how the Holy Spirit leads people in applying Gospel truths in other cultures. Missionary biographies give me an early glimpse of Rev 7:9 After this I looked, and there was a great crowd that no one could number. They were from every nation, tribe, people, and language.

Fiction is my preference but I’ve made myself temper it with non-fiction.
