Spread the Word!

I couldn’t believe my ears yesterday when I was chatting with someone who mentioned that although they love to read, they find it harder to read during the winter months.  They told me that although they loved to read, they struggle with depression and when the colder weather settles in they cannot seem to concentrate on a good book.  Their dilemma intrigued me so I did a bit of research on the matter.  It seems that they are not alone.  The more I researched the more I realized that it was not the winter months that was the problem, it was the depression.  Depression can be a crippling thing and it can affect every aspect of life.  Depression can encompass one’s emotions, (believe me, I have been there and done that) making it difficult to do anything, including finish a task.  Since reading has been proven to help depression, here are some practical tips to keep up with your reading list through this winter.

  1.  Read what you love.  You may feel the need to read self-help books but perhaps a good Calvin and Hobbs is just the ticket!
  2.  Listen when you cannot seem to concentrate.  Listen to audio books, even if you don’t hear every word.  Just listen.
  3. Don’t allow perfectionism to keep you from reading.  Life will never be perfect and it is okay to NOT finish every book you pick up.  As a matter of fact, you can read a few chapters of one book and move on to another.  The most important thing is, (you got it) READ.
  4. Give yourself a time limit.  Reading for 20 minutes every day helps to lift the spirits, increase brain function as well as help one to relax.

So grab a good book and chase those blues far, far away.  Share what you are reading on our Facebook Page.  May the Lord abundantly bless and keep you this Christmas Season, Stasia

Thank you Stasia for caring so much about your readers. Not only do you make books available for those with limited income (retired); but I was blown away by the helpful tips you gave for not only “winter” reading; but also on reading to relieve depression. Sometimes it takes an act of the will; and or an added discipline to get some reading in every day when you’re depressed. You don’t realize the benefits experienced after spending time reading when you are depressed, until AFTER you have consciously made the effort to make time for it.
THANK YOU for the much needed tips!!
Then on top of all that, to BLESS us and letting us know you care; just lifted my spirit and touched my heart!!
May God continue to bless you and yours abundantly during this Christmas season and in the new year. We might never meet on earth, but I shall look for you in eternity!!!

      Dearest Mary,

Thank you for this kind note. It really came at a time that I needed some encouragement. God bless you. I do care, I know what depression is like. Please know that I am praying for you but most of all, that the Lord loves you dearly. May He lavish His most extravagant love on you and yours this day and always. Love, Stasia
PS I am so sorry I did not get this posted yesterday. We had SNOW down here on the border! Our community was not prepared for it and there was no power or internet 😉
