I will never forget the joy I held in my heart when each of my six precious children read to me for the very first time. As career missionaries, we home-schooled our children when they were younger. Being a missionary has its challenges, especially in regards to family and education.
When our fifth daughter finally read a book for the first time, I could hardly hold back the tears. You see, our Ella was diagnosed with Autism before she was 2 years old. There was a lot of uncertainty in our lives when she was younger. But God touched her wee heart and all of a sudden, like spring flowers bursting into bloom, she just starting reading and learning. She soaked in knowledge like a sponge, she is kind of quirky that way. Her life is nothing less than a miracle, as she is in the top of her class and reads better than most under graduates. (She is only 12). Although I was so frustrated in those early years, I kept reading to her and all of my children. That is the some of the best advice I can give parents, read and pray.
Today is World Autism Awareness Day and today we want to honor that. As parents, we know a small portion of the difficulty that parents and caregivers face. It is so important to be aware and support families whose lives have been touched by ASD.
